Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy

Counselling and psychotherapy are forms of talking therapies such as CBT, ACT  or Schema Therapy. It is a transformational process leading to emotional liberation and changing of unhelpful patterns of thinking, attitudes or behaviours.
 What happens during therapy?

Working with a psychologist is like  a journey of discovering new and interesting places. It is the process of learning about yourself, the world and others. In this process, you will learn new skills of self-discovering that will enrich your personality. The role of the psychologist is not to tell you what to do, but to guide you along the path of this journey and help you to deal with your problems. However, the choices and decisions you make are solely yours.

How does psychological counseling / psychotherapy help?

Depends on the psychotherapeutic school, the therapist focuses on different psychological processes, personal traits or behaviours. For example, CBT focuses on thoughts, emotions, or behavior and set a goal or target for change. Psychodynamic therapies focus on the unconscious part of the psyche, and the existential psychotherapies focus on meaning, freedom and choice. Most psychologists use a combination of different therapy methods to unify them in an integrative approach. Choosing a method is the client right. Sometimes one form of therapy could be beneficial but not to another. This is because people are different and respond differently to each interventions. However, over the last decade, many serious scientific studies have shown that REBT/CBT is a quick and effective method of treating stress, anxiety, phobias, or depression. Complex chronic conditions such as personality disorder are well treated by Schema Therapy, Mentalization, Dialectic Therapy or EMDR.

What is needed to have a successful treatment?

Depends on the chosen form of psychological intervention, the you may have a more active or passive role of participation. REBT/CBT uses more direct approaches and the client is an active participant in the therapy. However, all forms of intervention expect the client to cooperate with the therapist. An important factor for successful work is building of a working alliance between you and the psychologist. An experienced therapist will show you respect, empathy, support personal choice and follow a strict code of confidentiality.
